9th annual Green Summit

Thank YOU for attending the Green Summit!

The Department of the Environment (DoE) hosted its annual signature event, the Green Summit, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the David C. Driskell Community Park in Hyattsville, MD, with the Low Impact Development (LID) Center, the City of Hyattsville, and partners. Look for us again in October 2024 as we celebrate the tenth anniversary!

We want to hear from you!

We hope you had a great time at this year's Green Summit. Please take this quick 3-min survey to help us make future events better.

FREE REUSABLE BAG DISTRIBUTION - WHILE SUPPLIES LAST

To help the public prepare for the upcoming ban on plastic bags, DoE will be giving FREE reusable bags to attendees, while supplies last. Beginning January 1, 2024, Prince George’s County prohibits all retailers (grocery stores, restaurants, big-box/department stores, convenience stores, gas stations, etc.) from providing a plastic carryout bag to shoppers and, with certain exceptions, must charge at least 10 cents for each paper or reusable bag provided. Learn more at mypgc.us/bagitright.

HELP CLEAN UP THE PARK & EARN SERVICE LEARNING HOURS

Volunteer with the City of Hyattsville for a special invasive removal and park clean-up in tandem with the Green Summit and Growing Green with Pride! Volunteer activities will take place 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and all ages are welcome.

Volunteers MUST register with the City of Hyattsville to participate in these community service opportunities.

You will be assigned to an age-appropriate activity, including invasive plant and vine removal from the Driskell Park woods, trash pick-up from the woods and creek, and trail maintenance. Please dress for outdoor yard work and bring water.

Children under 18 must be supervised by an adult. Adults will need to complete a guardian consent waiver for children under their supervision when they arrive. Activities are eligible for student service learning hours.

DONATE TO OUR ANIMAL SHELTER

Gently used items help provide our adoptable pets with clean and comfortable spaces with enrichment to help their personality shine while they await their FUR-ever home. Accepted used items include:

  • Cleaned bedding - sheets, blankets, linens (NO pillows please)
  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Newspaper
  • Muffin pans

The shelter is also seeking additional items on their wish list. Donations can be brought to the Green Summit (10/21), or to the Animal Services and Adoption Facility (any time during operating hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays).

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

DoE will host three (3) information sessions inside the Community Center at Driskell Park:

  • 11 – 11:45 am – Understanding Your Flood Risk

Learn about flooding prone areas in the County and how DoE and partners are helping residents take proactive measures to reduce their flood risk and to manage localized drainage.

  • 12 – 12:45 pm – Talking Trash

Our Resource Recovery Division will cover topics like our residential Clear the Curb waste collections and highlight the importance of recent legislation to curb plastic pollution, such as the January 1, 2024, plastic bag ban "Bag it Right" and single-use foodware, "Upon Request" only that's already in effect.

  • 1 – 1:45 pm – Rain Check Rebates and Stormwater stewardship (CBT)

Learn about the programs and financial resources for residents, HOAs, non-profits, businesses and other entities to install practices that help Prince George's reduce polluted runoff.
