Social Justice in Community Event Flyer

Social Justice in Community, a new virtual series brought in partnership between the Prince George's County Memorial Library System, the University of Maryland, airs on Thursdays from 2-3 pm. Join us as we hear from scholars at the University of Maryland about their research and how it both reflects and impacts our communities today. 

  • February 1 - Amber Colquhoun presents "Through Their Eyes: Examining Affluent Black Intra-Group Attitudes and Their Political Consequences." Ms. Colquhoun is a Ph.D. studying American Politics. Her research interests include race and ethnic politics, political behavior, and public opinion. She received her B.A. with honors in African American Studies and Psychology.   • February 15 - Tori Justin presents, "Black Women, Yoga, and Wellness." Tori Justin is a PhD candidate in the department of Kinesiology. Her research interests articulate black feminist theory, health equity, and the philosophy of science. More specifically, her position is the disparate health outcomes of Black women as the embodied outcome of structural injustice. Tori's past and present projects focus on how scientific knowledge historically and contemporarily subjugate the Black body and alternative ways of knowing the body. You may find her research in "Feminist Media Studies and Health: An Interdisciplinary Journal and the Sociology of Sport Journal."   • February 22 - Nikita Viswasam presents, "When Immigration Became Illegal: Race, Labor, and Asian America." Nikita Viswasam is a PhD student in the Sociology Department focusing on social inequalities, with research interests in immigration, social determinants of health in the U.S., urban sociology, qualitative methodologies, mixed methods, and community-engaged/participatory research. Khoi Young - Empowering the Game Flyer

February 6, 2024 at 7 pm - We celebrate Black History Month by welcoming history-in-the-making Khoi Young, a Prince George’s County native who has taken his gymnastic skills to Stanford University and has represented Team USA at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship. Learn more about his journey, accomplishments, and barriers that he has overcome to get to where he is now! Khoi Young is a student-athlete currently pursuing his education at Stanford University. Much of his athletic success revolves around gymnastics, where he has proudly represented Team USA in various international competitions, earning multiple medals on the world stage. At school, he is studying product design. He aspires to blend his passion for achieving excellence in athletics with the creation of innovative physical products. His goal is to not only excel in the realm of gymnastics, but to also contribute to the design and development of products that can help the next generation reach their own version of success in sports and in life.
